Language Development Centre

In the Language Development Centre we are trying to understand children’s lexical development, by examining the types of information they recruit to acquire the meanings of new words.

In several ongoing studies, we are exploring infants’ sensitivity to a variety of non-linguistic cues to the part-of-speech category and meaning of novel words. We are also attempting to determine whether infants interpret an object word differently, depending on the kind of object being labeled.

In other lines of research, we are investigating children’s understanding of object words, in particular proper names (words for individuals) and count nouns (words for kinds). We are also exploring how children’s understanding of these words is related to adults’ understanding.
